From Grassroots to Community Impact

Breakfast as a family is the best way to start your day.

Nestled in North Haven, Connecticut, HART United began with a simple yet powerful idea: that individuals with developmental disabilities deserve more than just care—they deserve dignity, choice, and a place in the community.

In 1983, this idea took shape when a small group of passionate advocates, led by Dr. J. Lawrence Tanenbaum, opened the doors to Lawrence Hall, a licensed group home for six men. It was a groundbreaking moment—one that challenged the dehumanizing conditions of institutional living and marked the first step toward true integration and independence.

That home was made possible thanks to a collaborative effort. With the support of the Community Foundation, the Unitarian Society, the Hamden Probus Club, and countless volunteers across greater New Haven, the vision of community-based support began to come alive.

But progress didn’t come without struggle. In 1987, HART United worked to integrate six women into East Gate Condominiums. Faced with neighborhood resistance, the organization stood firm.

After a 12-page court decision, the women were granted the right to live there, setting another precedent and opening doors to meaningful friendships and acceptance within the community.

Today, HART United provides vital support services to over 150 individuals with developmental disabilities across Connecticut. Whether it’s in group homes, independent living arrangements, respite care, or companion homes, our mission remains the same: respect and dignity for all individuals.

We continue to advocate for legislative change, empower families with greater choices, and build environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. As proud members of The Alliance Connecticut, we stand united in our commitment to inclusion, equity, and excellence in care.

From grassroots beginnings to transformative milestones, the heart of HART United remains unchanged—supporting people, strengthening communities, and always believing in the power of belonging.
